Interior Inspiration

Making an appearance online once again! The weather here in Sydney is stifling so I've been disinclined to do anything whatsoever (plus still waiting on a new internet modem for my laptop!)

I'm thinking everything interiors at the moment. Maybe because I don't have any money. I seem to crave 'stuff' more when I don't have to ability to attain it. I've become so good at imagining what I would get, and creating pretty collages in Polyvore that I've almost fooled myself into believing it's all real. Slightly disturbing.

My redecoration at the studio is almost complete and I can't wait to share photos with you all (I'm thinking it may be time for another View From Here post?). How adorable and inspiring are all these home offices and interiors? I'm slightly green with envy and dizzy with ideas...

Xmas Wish List

Xmas Wish List

I'm in the process of settling in to my new spot in the studio. I'm over near some windows now in a cute little corner. I've been organising my stuff more ergonomically - like putting my printer on the desk so I'm not reaching over horizontally to grab printouts. I've decorated with hanging postcards, some artworks and some fabric scraps framed in embroidery hoops. It's all looking rather twee.

Oh, but it could be soooo much better! A funky-ass wall clock (love this bright pink cuckoo clock from Plasticland. Some cute plush toys to populate the bookshelves. Bookends. Weird candles. Sleep-inducing sofas. Retro desk fan. Tea pot. Funky desk lamp...oh and a cotton quilted blanket for summer (ok, that one's for home).

The only bugger about Polyvore is that you can't clip images from Etsy, so my collage is kinda representative. There some super cool handmade toys there, Lumpie the Stitch Doll, knitted bunnies, skittle dolls and other strange little things.

One of my favorite sellers on Etsy is Hindvisk Vintage. They just have the best vintage items I've ever seen - and their photography makes even a humble stapler look awesomely cool. The items that have particularly caught my eye are the street signs, gas station numbers, little red lantern and assorted letterpress.

Other vintage treasures I'd love to adopt into my studio are this vintage desk fan, this vintage radio and a this beautiful apothecary bottle.

But perhaps one of the most pressing items on my wish list is a new desk lamp. While I've got excellent natural light from the windows - our overhead light is atrocious! I have a little desk lamp at the moment that's hit the end of the road - his head doesn't stay in position. I was introduced to this lighting site the other day, which is based here in Aus. It's an online store (my favorite kind of store) with loads of choice - and has really good search refining options (much less of a headache). I've got my eye on this chrome desk lamp (maybe I could persuade the family for Xmas?!). In a fantasy world I'd get this amazing desk lamp.

I'll take some photos of my studio soon once the dust has settled. I'm oh-so-very chuffed with it!

Anatomy of an Artwork
Jack & the Beanstalk

Greetings once again! I have been hiding away working on several artworks lately, as well as having no internet. I feel as though I've had an arm chopped off. I've had to plan everything I do since all my tools and equipment are at my studio (1/2 hour bus ride away) but internet access is at home or in wireless hotspots (while my laptop battery lasts). It's all been quite topsy-turvy.

This weekend was the long awaited LeeLoo Once Upon exhibition at aMBUSH Gallery in Sydney. The exhibition brought together 38 Australian artists to create four pieces in the theme of fairytales. Each artist was assigned their own fairytale, mine being Jack & the Beanstalk.

I was one of the few artists who didn't do hand-drawn or painted artworks. I do hand-drawn elements as well as embroidery, but I predominantly pull everything together in Photoshop. In order to illustrate exactly what it is I do I thought I'd write this post and show you the original sources of some of my material:

Above is some of the original sources I used for the first piece Jack #1. I usually scour public domain searches looking for good quality scans of artwork, the body of Jack comes from Jenny Norstrom's Boy with the Cherries, via Wikimedia Commons. I then hand-drew the face from the Victorian Boy illustration, cutting and pasting his hair over the top (see the sketches below).

The cow comes from a Victorian clip art collection, and the striped paper from iStockphoto. The plants in the background were found in Wikimedia Commons, sifting through the botanical illustrations collected there. The star came from an image sharing website, and created the hanging stars in the background of all the artworks.

Everything is cut and pasted, adjusted, some small effects added and other Photoshop magic to pull it all together. The little icons I included in each piece show a little flower gradually growing, representing the progression of the story and the images.

The files were then sent to Genius Print in Melbourne and made into Giclee prints on Canson PhotoSatin Premium Archival Lustre Paper (270gsm). There are only 5 prints of each artwork, and each is signed and numbered on the reverse. The artworks sent to the exhibition are all numbered "1" and framed in the beautiful white baroque style frames selected by Leeloo.

If you are interested in buying any of these artworks, contact Renee at renee@leeloo.com.au. All artworks are A5 in size, excluding the frame. Each is priced at AUD$130 (approx USD$118) and are the only prints in the limited edition run to be framed.

Lust List

Lust List - DIY

I don't know where I come up with these titles...they just seem to pop up at the most opportune times. I'm sneakily posting this at work since my home internet has died a sudden death and I'm getting the run around from the tele-company. Meh...

So I'm trying to think of what I can wear to the opening of the Once Upon show this Thursday. It's always a rad excuse to dress up (or even, shock, buy something new). But since I'm on limited funds, and more importantly, my mother will be at the show and will give me the evil eye and that 'look' if she seems me wearing new togs...I'm desperately thinking of fast DIY solutions. Compounding this miserable state of affairs is the fact that I'm currently feeling a little extra soft around the edges and hating everything in my wardrobe. Not a good start.

So the specifics I need to keep in mind:

  • It will probably be stinking hot (thank you Sydney heatwave)
  • There will be 200+ people crammed into a small gallery
  • I'm feeling frumpy

  • Solution? If I can manage to get a bit of sun on my legs (not effective thus far), and a few coats of fake tan, then denim cut-offs may be the way to go. With heels, a light summer top and a DIY fringe necklace. Oh, and a long-overdue haircut & colour. Art openings can be a funny thing in Sydney. Some people do the casual, grunge look. Others do the quirky, vintage look. And others again just do the plain ol' kooky. I'm going for something in the middle. Shorts and a tee to be comfy and casual, and heels and a statement neck piece to step it up a level.

    Denim Cut-off Shorts

The opening image is a collage of things I've discovered along the way that I am keen to have a go at making myself. First up is the much-waffled-on-about fringe neck piece (ducking into the fabric store this arvo), I love this one by ThreeHorses on Etsy. So long fringing, ribbon and black dye here I come!

Other goodies I want to tackle are:

  • Lace applique neck piece - I'm thinking COLOUR for once
  • Same deal with a tank top
  • Feathery capelet (how coooool)
  • Screen-printed tee (ok I've had the screen + ink for 2 years, come on!)
  • Suspender-ish tank aka Sass&Bide

  • That should keep me well and truly busy with needle and thread. However there is one item I am hoping to invest in - the boyfriend jean. I have one pair of jeans, mid-waist wide leg jeans, hot, but can only be worn with heels. So a slouchy, loose pair would be awesome. I think the trick to these is to wear shoes that show off your ankles. I think any top can go, if you know how to play it. An over-sized boyfriend tee might seem like too much 'baggy-ness' but if it falls of your shoulder, tres bien, and a pair of heels wouldn't go astray.

    The Boyfriend Jean

And I think I've found my inspiration for Thursday night's outfit...Lisa.M is a model and design student from Bern, Zurich. I absolutely LOVE this look. So simple yet so hot! Ok, so I'll never have legs like that but I'm prepared to delude myself a little for one night.

    Just a Minute in November

    iWish Wednesdays: 11.11.09

    Items in this set:
    American Eagle Outfitters intimates, $30
    Monsoon intimates, 6 GBP
    Topshop.com t shirt, 20 GBP
    Stella McCartney boots, $1,385
    Shopplasticland.com ring, $22

READ - Dark Echo by F.G.Cottam. Loved this, a nail-biting supernatural thriller/mystery without any of the cliches. It's actually quite subtle on the spooky stuff in a way. Definitely going to order his debut The House of Lost Souls. If you like a good murder mystery, a bit of spook and 1920s theme then check it out.

WATCH - Wuthering Heights on ABC iView. I somehow kept missing the show on tv, so thank goodness I discovered ABC's catch up episodes - all free to watch. Just need a decent internet connection now...

LISTEN - Red Jezebel - I saw these guys supporting Little Birdy about two years ago and really liked them. So I'm keen to listen for nostalgia sake, especially now that I've found them on iTunes!

DO - Open my online store! I'll be posting some prints in the next two weeks :) :) :)

GO - I took an alternate route to the studio the other day and walked past a second-hand store I've never noticed before. They have heaps of cool old furniture, knick-knacks and other goodies - and that's just snooping around the front windows. On a mission to go and check it out asap!

How to...Create Your Brand (Part 3)

yes ok, kinda irrelevant. couldn't think of anything better

Woo - it's been a while since I posted one of these! This is more of a show-and-tell post, I've finished my rebranding and wanted to share. We're getting closer to D-Day with the online store, so expect a few more posts regarding packaging, posting etc etc in the next few weeks. Ok! So here we go...

    Logo & Graphics

So my logo has essentially stayed the same, but now with fabric texture inside. I can change this to suit any particular purpose, but this is one of my favorites. I decided to continue the theme with my icons - each one has a fabric or paper texture that reflects the colour of the corresponding site - making it easy for readers to recognise.

I've also continued the circular icon with other buttons - keeping it in one colour (#cccccc or #999999) and selecting a little icon to symbolise the link. So, hand writing for my blog, price tag for my store and a trusty ol' envelope for email. I've also created a little icon for profiles on Etsy, Blogger etc that ties in with the graphics and layout.

    Typography

I've kept the use of Baskerville and Century Gothic, but decided to work them a bit differently. Hand drawing the characters of Baskerville (regular, italic, numbers, upper and lower case) reflects the handmade, textured feel of my artwork. Century Gothic is a clean, modern font that adds a little touch of class.

Since the hand drawn type isn't entered into a type creation program I have to manually create words in Photoshop. So I keep this for headers that I'll reuse and won't change often. I did plan to treat these the same way as the logo, with fabric textures within, but the size of headers etc is too small to be legible this way. But now I quite like the simplicity of it.

For blocks of copy that doesn't need to change often (welcome message, contact details etc) I create a graphic using Century Gothic small caps fully justified. It takes some time to balance out the kerning and leading. I also keep the same greeting for all my profiles/sites so it's instantly familiar. Typography for the blog is a mixture of serif and sans serif typefaces. For links etc I write in all caps sans serif, for post headings I've chosen a serif font - which generally continue the theme already established.

Website, Blog, Business Cards & Online Store

And here a some screen shots of my new look website, blog, business cards (yet to be printed) and currently empty online store over at Etsy:

And this is the latest piece I finished. I will be submitting this to Curvy for the 2010 annual, and it will also be one of the first prints in my new store. Just need to find a good, affordable printer!

    For the Love of Fringing

Hand Dip Dyed Black on Nude Fringe and Leather Chain Necklace
    Three Horses

Given my poorly financial state of affairs I've starting thinking DIY once again. I do rather enjoy a spot of DIY, but I'm usually too lazy and I prefer buying the beautiful things designers on Etsy etc make. I like to support these small businesses and designers, especially when you're getting a unique, one-of-a-kind, handmade item that no one else has! But until things improve I'm looking to DIY solutions (which is even more one-of-a-kind!)

Maximum Fringe Necklace - Black, Rose, Champagne
    iheartnorwegianwood

One other thing I've been mulling over is how to spruce up a limited wardrobe. I have a proliferation of black leggings and white t-shirts, which form the perfect base for a variety of looks. Both of these things easily fall into the How to Live Like an Artist forum...stay tuned for that one.

So! My first DIY project will be a fringe necklace. You can buy a few metres of fringing in a neutral, pale shade - giving you multiple possibilities when it comes to dying a variety of colours. I'm even considering adding some fringing to a t-shirt. I found a great tutorial at oolamoola. Once you get the basic idea it's easy to come up with other ideas along the same principles.

Do you know any good tutorials for fringing DIY? I'd love to see them! And I hope to get around to posting a How To for a necklace soon!

    Sneek Peek: Once Upon

Phew...well that's been a crazy two weeks! After hours of stitching, drawing, scanning and photoshopping my four artworks for the Once Upon group show are finished. If you read my previous post then you'll already know that my assigned fairy tale was Jack 'n' the Beanstalk.

Four artworks of one character posed a rather big challenge for my collage style - since it's next to impossible to find four existing heads of the same person to use in a variety of poses/expressions. So how did I overcome that hurdle? Well, you'll have to come along to the show to see!

If you're not in Sydney (or Australia for that matter!), don't fear. All the artists will be posting the full view of their artworks after the show. Those pieces that don't sell will be posted on the Leeloo online boutique - so you might be able to own your own if you're lucky. But judging by the confirmed over 200 attendees for opening night, I'd say the chances of that are slim (touch wood).

My artworks are going to be printed, so I'm do a limited edition run of 5. Artworks numbered "1" will be sent to the show and beautifully framed. The remaining 4 will be my first prints for sale online (so so soon I promise!). They will be numbered and signed for authenticity. So all you beautiful people in the US, UK, Europe and Timbucktoo can get your pretty hands on them too!

    Excited, much? Heck yeah!

    iWish Wednesdays: 04.10.09
    Vino Gris

Procrastinating just a little...I'm rather enjoying these colour theme sets at the moment. I've also noticed there have been a bunch of cool improvements to Polyvore. I've been asked (begged) to do a How to... on using Polyvore. What do you think, should I do it?

    One of a Kind...

Images (clockwise): one, two, three, four

Just a short post today. Came across Griffin House today when I had a quick look for some new tunes (need variety when I'm working on a bunch of artworks!). It's quite a sweet, catchy song - nothing fantastically original - but sometimes it's nice to listen to straightforward, familiar harmonies. I love the piano in this song, puts me in a Sunday mood. Which is nice on a Monday...

Currently working away on my pieces for the Once Upon group show. I'm posting sneek peeks on my Facebook page. I'm absolutely exhausted tonight, but it's finally at that exciting stage when it all comes together. Only two weeks till showtime!
