So This is Xmas
2009

Seasons Greetings to you all! Thank you to all of you who have been reading my little blog here - I know it's a bit hit and miss at times - but it's been lovely to get all your comments and encouragement since I started. I hope you're all enjoying your festivities, whatever they are!

If you read my earlier posts (1, 2) planning Xmas this year, then you'll already know that the theme was blue and silver this year. Mum outdid herself as always decorating the tree (there may have been some new unauthorized teal blue decos among the old blue...don't tell Dad).

I took it upon myself to decorate the table and managed to do it using things we already had. Turquoise blue round place mats, silver painted square place mats, dark blue main dinner plate, small white plate, blue and white floral bread plate, dark blue napkin with pale blue ribbon. Champagne flutes, wine goblets for whatever else we wanted to drink, on some square blue and white tile coasters and also round silver coasters.

I originally placed a tall vase of white flowers we already had onto a cake stand. The cake stand allows you to place dishes of food on the table using maximum available space. My Aunt bought around some blue hydrangeas when she arrived, so I swapped them in for the white flowers. I also salvaged some salsa jars, wrapped baking paper around them and lit some tea lights inside them (awesomely cute).

I didn't manage to get a blue outfit together, but I did a quick sewing job on a tie-dye neckpiece I've been planning. Am really chuffed with the result - so I'll post photos soon when I can figure out my new happy-snap camera. Here's to a successful 2010!

I Have Nothing to Wear!
New Years Eve 09

legalnoresident

Ah, New Years Eve. Is there are NY Grinch? There should be...so many of us dread this one night every year. I know I always have. But usually because I've left organising everything to the last minute - or being dragged to some bodgy pub in the sticks with no means of escape.

So this year I am glad everything has been wonderfully organised early by a friend of a friend and I'm looking forward to a (predominantly) girls night out near the harbour on the rooftop of an affectionately grubby pub. I don't even have to think about food and drinks - it's all included in the ticket. So all I have to worry about is the all important outfit. Easy. Not. But here are some ideas to help you, even if I can't help myself:

  • Cool and comfy summer dress to wear over your cozzie
  • Some metallic thongs/flip-flops, sparkle + practical = awesome
  • Invisible Zinc - acts as a sunscreen, moisturiser and has a little shimmer
  • Bronzer (of course)
  • Keep your makeup simple and waterproof. All you really need is a sweet lip gloss with a little punch of colour to set off your bronzed skin
  • Trusty straw fedora and beachy jewelry. Done

  • An exclusive club/bar calls for a sexy, sleek and slightly understated dress. The right fabric and cut is always sexier than baring skin for the sake of it
  • Some sky-high heels that work perfectly with your dress
  • A cute little clutch
  • Go all out and get your hair and makeup done (or at least look like you have!)

  • Just because it's a sweaty/muddy festival doesn't mean you can't be a little glam - team a tee with feminine, interesting details with your shorts/jeans (steer clear of sequins in summer - you don't want to blind everyone during the day)
  • Stick with comfy shoes, heels are just stupid at a festival
  • Have fun with kooky, bright accessories - chunky bangles, rings and hats
  • A colourful/patterned tote bag will hold onto that all important water bottle and other 'goodies'
  • Basically dress for comfort, but look for added textures, details etc to spruce it up a level

  • A limited representation of the diversity of this theme - but think just slightly oddball
  • A maxi dress with lace-up boots
  • or, a t-shirt dress, unusual color, casual mixed with smart - bend the rules
  • a kooky, second-hand clutch bag
  • unusual hair piece with a plastic watch...
  • ...You get the drift. If this is your style then I really don't need to explain it! It takes a certain amount of creativity to do this style, but in the end it all comes down to confidence

  • The house party calls for smart casual
  • A pretty, embellished blouse with jeans is a no-fail option
  • Go for some bold colour - it's fun and festive
  • Have fun matching back colours or textures with your shoes (heels or flats) and other accessories
  • Chunky, colourful jewelry is casual but cool - as is a funky little bag
  • There are some cool retro style drinks coolers around - so you can be sure that your BYO drinks will keep cool when the ice melts in the bathtub

Hope this helps you a little - or at least gets you thinking ahead! I've been so wrapped up with xmas that I almost forgot to think about NYE. No idea yet, but I'll whip something up I'm sure!

    Monsieur, Madame (et Petite Madame)

    Monsieur

And here they are. As promised, these two latest artworks made their debut last night at the Bill&George xmas drinks show (Monsieur was posted earlier, but has since had a little reductive surgery). I've included two close ups of each so you can see the detail. These look amazing printed out - I'm so chuffed with the result!

    Monsieur

    Monsieur

    Madame

I'll be posting these two soon over on my Etsy store, and in the meantime I'm trying to track down some 14x14 white box frames from Ikea. They're so hot they've sold out! They are significantly cheaper than the custom one I had made, but with no word on a restock date I might just have to go custom again.

    Madame

    Madame

When they're all framed and on the wall they look amazing - and I think that goes with any artwork. There's something about a beautiful mount and frame that makes an artwork shine - it makes you feel warm and fuzzy. I think I'm definitely hooked, and I'm looking forward to spending a little on my favorite artists works soon...

    Outfit this Room!
    Blue Christmas

    Summer Blue

    Winter Blue

We're having a blue theme xmas this year, which for some people is unusual and certainly unconventional. Thinking and planning the tree and table decorations gets addictive and ends up spilling over into your outfit ideas. So no matter which hemisphere you celebrate in there's a blue xmas to keep you summery cool/wintery warm and festive!

    (Monsieur, Madame) et Petite Madame

    Wasted Time

Hallo darlings! I'm in a good mood - been on a roll with my artwork lately. And I'm loving the process of listing everything on my online store at last! I'm getting ready for our little Xmas do at the studio. I was asked to design the flyer, which was so fabulous. We've been hanging artworks in preparation, still some more to go, as well as lighting. But man, it is looking amazing! There is a wonderful variety of styles and mediums.

    Boys Break Hearts

So far we have some abstract paintings by Pauley, a light-up diorama by Alli, some cute wooly nests and other fabric/textile masterpieces by Michelle, so mannequin dummies awaiting fashionable creations from Holly, some big chalkboards itching for Bek's musings, a little screening nook for Chris' multimedia work...and that's just the start. The studio is even decorated with tinsel and baubles - it's looking so cosy and friendly.

    Petite Madame

Meanwhile, I've finished three more illustrations to include alongside my last two pieces. But you'll have to wait till tomorrow to see two of the new ones! But I'll be nice and show you the other one - which is listed for sale now.

I ordered some custom frames from Frameshop.com.au the other weekend. The prints look amazing when they're printed, but once they're framed...I almost don't believe that I created them. So I'm totally chuffed with the result! Stay tuned for pics of the other two artworks - as well as some snaps from the night.

    Print Society
    Inspiration Wall Goodness

Everyone loves an inspiration wall. I know that because searching that phrase on Google Image search results in some outstanding images. Now that doesn't happen very often. They are almost like a shrine - you could sit and gaze at one for hours. I also think that a beautiful inspiration wall is the perfect reason to buy some art.

I can't recall how I found Print Society but it goes without saying that I'm glad I did. Still finding it's feet, the site is a one-stop shop (as such) for fine art prints. All the photographs, illustrations, paintings etc are listed with all the relevant info. If you like it, click the link to buy and the site takes you directly to the artist's preferred store. On-demand sites such as Zazzle are not included - simply in an effort to whittle out the bad stuff and ensure that only professional works are listed.

It's got a lovely interface, with big thumbnails, and brilliant search options. So you can browse by budget, style, popularity, artists or gallery. Print Society is aiming to bring together artists, galleries and their audiences. You can also follow your favorite artists to keep up to date on any new works.
There's a lot of potential to this site and it will be interesting to see where it leads. It's particularly brilliant for emerging artists because Etsy is included on the listings, allowing greater exposure.

I've been flicking through looking for beautiful prints to buy (eventually). I'd love to add to my small collection of ACEOs hanging on my wall at the studio. These images are inspiring me - I'm dreaming of wooden pegs, wall decals and white box frames...

Which reminds me. Have you seen my Etsy store yet? I've got two artworks posted up already, and I'm working on some new ones to add. We're having a xmas show at the studio, where I'll be showing some of my works in progress. If I remember, I'll take some photos!

Just some of the artworks currently on my wish list. How gorgeous would they look all framed up on my wall?

    Making Life Beautiful

    Beautiful Life

Click the collage to get all the links and sources.

Oh my, it's been a while since I was consistently dedicated to blogging. Setting up my online store has taken a lot of work, but also a lot of money. Which means that everything that comes in goes straight back out again. So when I'm not working on one of three different series of artworks or tinkering with online setups I'm working full time till xmas at my casual job. It can get really depressing. Why do all creative people have to work bum jobs to get by? It's seriously disheartening. You end up working twice as much, for less money that your friends and still not having a life. Ok! enough ba-hum-bug whinging.

When I do get the chance I take a quick zip around my favorite blogs to see what I'm missing out on. Here are some of the beautiful things, people and blogs that have brightened my day a little this past while (you'll have to excuse me using Polyvore to assemble everything - I'm being sneaky at work).

    How to Wear...The Uniform Project

I hate to break it to you, but if you haven't heard of Sheena Matheiken and The Uniform Project, then I'm afraid you've been living under a rock. The basic idea is that Sheena wears the same dress for an entire year and documents her outfit ideas online. In her own words:
"Starting May 2009, I have pledged to wear one dress for one year as an exercise in sustainable fashion. Here’s how it works: There are 7 identical dresses, one for each day of the week. Every day I will reinvent the dress with layers, accessories and all kinds of accouterments, the majority of which will be vintage, hand-made, or hand-me-down goodies. Think of it as wearing a daily uniform with enough creative license to make it look like I just crawled out of the Marquis de Sade's boudoir.

The Uniform Project is also a year-long fundraiser for the Akanksha Foundation, a grassroots movement that is revolutionizing education in India. At the end of the year, all contributions will go toward Akanksha’s School Project to fund uniforms and other educational expenses for children living in Indian slums."

It's a fascinating process and certainly gets you thinking about whether you could do it yourself. Flicking through her outfit photos I noticed some basic principles guiding her creative choices - principles that could be adopted by anyone. So here's what I discovered:

    The Uniform Project Basics

  • Staple - You take one garment and base your outfit from that. A basic black reversible shirt dress (Sheena's was designed by Eliza Starbuck) will cover all options, but the same idea applies to a dress or garment of another colour/style.

Using the dress as a blank canvas you can layer over or under it, or use it to layer over something else i.e. it can layer over a tee and shorts like a cardigan, or you can layer tops/dresses/pants over or under it.

  • Interesting Collars and Sleeves - If you want to layer a top or dress underneath then interesting collars can be worn out over a dress to add colour, texture and interest. The same goes for sleeves.

  • Belts, Scarves, Necklaces, Hats and Shoes - Have an assortment of accessories on hand. Belts add colour, interest and define your waist. You can pick a colour theme to work around or try a retrospective/vintage theme, and use accessories to build a story. Interesting scarves are perfect for winter, but don't forget cool neckpieces and necklaces for summer.

  • Colour - An assortment of colourful, patterned and textured tights and leggings will see you through winter. Try knee-hi socks when the seasons chance. These are the cheapest and easiest option to introduce colour into your outfit. Have fun with other accessories and try different colours.

  • So if I ever find the energy I think it's time for a spring clean of my wardrobe!
