Feed a Freelancer

In true freelancer style I'm chasing invoices and skirting my way around rent and bills. The depressing reality is all my unpaid invoices will only just cover my overdue rent. I'd rather not wait in line attempting to get welfare just yet...So! In the spirit of generating a living, I think it's a good time to remind you all of the artworks I've got for sale around the place.

If you've been thinking of purchasing some of my original art or limited edition prints here is where you can find, scrutinize and buy. If you want to know anything more about any of the works, just email me direct at jordan@theartofjordan.com. Muchos grassy-arse mi amigos!

Disband: An Exhibition
These three artworks are a vintage-retro delight - with custom typography hand stitched onto printed calico. The printing is done in-house by myself. Each piece took 24 hours on average to complete. They come already framed in flat white custom frames.

AUD$500 (incl. GST) / USD$449.95
(available via Leeloo.com.au)

If you like the artwork but can't afford an original, why not buy a print? The level of detail in the digital collage is much clearer and easier to appreciate. There's no typography/stitching but maybe you prefer it without? (canvas, framed, matted or laminated prints & greetings cards also available)

from AUD$22.50 for a laminated print
(available from RedBubble)

ma.gallery: Back From the Dead
After some horrific framing issues I had to create these two artworks overnight in time for a 8:30am courier to the gallery on opening day. Ironically, these are two of my favorite pieces I've done. Showcasing my unending love for the Day of the Dead, religious iconography, muerte skulls and weirdness in general, these printed calico artworks feature hand stitching as well.

AUD$300.00
(available via me)

Keeping Perspective

The real issue is not talent as an independent element, but talent in relationship to will, desire, and persistence. Talent without these things vanishes and even modest talent with those characteristics grows.
   Milton Glaser
You are not here merely to make a living. You are here to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, and with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world. You impoverish yourself if you forget this errand.

Moving On...

For Love (8x10 Unframed Original Fine Art Photograph) by Yvette Inufio, $15 on Etsy

So I should probably give you all a heads up on where I'm at - and where I'm heading. If you're interested, naturally. This whole freelancing thing is a rollercoaster of in-the-deep-end learning experiences. Lately I've had quite a bit of illustration work come my way which is exciting beyond belief. Managing jobs and work flow, speeding up my rate of completion, managing invoices and day to day costs, figuring out how to get more work....it's exhausting.

But I totally wouldn't trade all that for a regular job working for someone else. Despite the uncertainty, I still get a buzz out of running my own business, finding new ways to make it grow and weather the lean times. I also love dictating my own work hours, where and when (be that studio, the park or a cafe). The sense of freedom is hard to deny.

So anyway - I'm trying to move onwards and upwards with my biz. You may have noticed I've closed my Etsy store. You can still buy fine art prints (through Redbubble and Artsprojekt), at the high quality I prefer. While I lose that somewhat one-on-one interaction with you, those sites are efficient and professional and save me a lot of time (a precious commodity for me right now). Other things are also available there, tees, cards etc - so check 'em out.

I'll also be finishing up with this blog and moving on to a streamlined website back at my URL. I'm hoping to combine an easy to update image gallery and portfolio and provide more information of who I am alongside a new blog and online store. The end result for you, lovely people, is only having to visit one web address for everything.

I'll obviously be opening an online store there - but I'll be keeping that exclusive to original and framed artworks. I'm also getting closer to completing the Major Arcana of my Tarot Deck, and may have found somewhere to get it printed (hooray!) - so I'll be taking pre-orders for that through my store.

I am also seriously looking into art markets here in Sydney. Markets have been the launch pad for many a creative business, and I think it's well overdue for me. I'll probably start out with one-off art and design markets to test my feet, and if all goes well I'd like to get a regular spot somewhere once a month. It will be nice to talk to people and let them see the work in the flesh!

There'll be a brand new design, business cards, monthly newsletter and for any media types - my attempt at a press release every so often. Eeeep.

I won't be running away anytime soon though! I'm still trying to get my head around Wordpress and find a suitable theme. I'll probably end up throwing some of my miniature savings at someone to take over and make it work...absolutely no patience.

Launch Party with DesignFed'ers Katerina and Carolyn (photo: Just in Focus)

I was a roving reporter for Design Federation last week at the 2010 Fashion Palette conference in Sydney. Along with the team Monique and Surungi (blog writing) and Bianca (press photographer), I was designated live-tweeter. Hopefully some creatives out there found my tweets inspiring. I gave short summaries on each runway - trying to describe each label in 140 letters - along with tips and advice from the featured speakers.

If you are an aspiring fashionista I urge you to scan through the tweets and pick out some names to look into further, such as Samantha Wills, Peter Dwyer, and Anina.net. There are a plethora of photos from the runways doing the rounds, but be sure to check out Bianca's amazing shots here and here (or my amazingly crap iPhone shots here).

My highlight was listening to photographer and illustrator Kelly Thompson speak - she is so insanely adorable and talented I just wanted to kidnap her. DF will be posting an article soon, but in the meantime check out MammaTuppy's coverage of the event.
